Riddle (2013) Review by Handy Andy from United States
Firstly, I truly find it hard to accept someone reviewing this movieand giving it a 10...wrong movie I think. I gave this movie 2 starsonly because I thought the idea was good but the outcome was not sogood. I believe in giving young actors a chance and I felt they triedtheir best in a lack lustered affair.Val Kilmer, what do I say...hadabout 20 lines in the whole move and was so poor maybe he should havehung his boots up after the 80's comedy, Top Secret. He just didn'twant to be there, his body language was about as solid as a wet paperbag. The script had so many holes in it and the basis of the storylinewas "riddled" with flaws. The filming was also very D grade. No smoothtransitions, no fluency. At times the camera work was trying too hard, too hard to be shot as a blockbuster instead of just being the movie itwas suppose to be. It could have been a good B grader, however in myopinion it didn't even reach the perils of an F.
Riddle (2013) Review by adrossan from Australia
Riddle commences with an initially interest-grabbing tale - Holly'sbrother Nathan disappears and not a word is ever discovered about hiswhereabouts.
We jump forward three years with Nathan still missing, and one dayHolly is certain she has seen him, and promptly gives chase.
Here the scriptwriters had an immense opportunity to take the viewer ona roller coaster ride of mystery, suspense, thrills and a touch ofhorror.
You will want to ask why Holly never mentions Nathan's shoes.....butafter overcoming her differences with the school associates she meetsin the town of Riddle, she continues her pursuit of Nathan, despitebeing warned off by the Sheriff (Val Kilmer) and a mystery man (WllliamSadlier).
I've never seen a Sheriff with a pony-tail and I was itching to take myscissors to a very unconvincing Val Kilmer's odd hairstyle - it musthave been a deal clincher for him to keep the horse's backside on hishead in exchange for playing his small part in the film.
Unfortunately, once a prime discovery is made the story appears to havepainted itself into a corner, and to me it felt as if the originalscriptwriter had quit and was replaced with a 10 year old with budgetcontrol.
The end sequences descend into farce, and the riddle of Riddle is neverreally explained.
It's no surprise why so many films are failures when they betray thecinema-goers trust with this type of dross.
One star for providing young actors and film creators with employment,no stars for Val Kilmer and his wooden horse with tail impersonation.
Riddle (2013) Review by Ed_Blackadder from Mrs Miggins' Pie Shoppe
So, I just watched this movie and was reasonably impressed by thefilmmaking style (not the film itself) and looked up who and why onIMDb. This is a local production with $7 million of independent moneyinvested which made this all the more impressive. OK, I'm not sayingthis film is brilliant but you have to take this into account whichputs things into perspective. The cast is decent and it's nice to seesome big (ish) names attached to this. Val Kilmer is an enigma, he'scapable of greatness (and one of my fav actors) but rarely gets off hisass to do anything about it. He's always rock solid but there is zerodrive in him these days but we can hope. William Saddler is a hardworking actor who has an amazing amount of film credits but I willalways remember him in the brilliant 'Shawshank Redemption'. ElisabethHarnois plays Holly who is the sister of the missing boy, she is notonly beautiful but a very talented actor. Diora Baird is Amber, daughter of Sheriff Richards (Kilmer) and also talented (not to mentiondrop dead gorgeous).
The bottom line is, it's a tad slow, well produced, well acted, withdecent direction (why is there two directors??) and is almostenjoyable, has it's moments and passes the time.
Not for everyone.
Score: 6/10
